- Description
- An open-plan workspace is a form of office design used by many organizations to improve communication and to enhance creative outcomes of their employees. Although it has many advantages, an open-plan workspace creates some problems arising from lack of personal control and environmental distraction. In this regard, the main objective of this study is to examine the effects of personal control and environmental distraction on creative outcome through satisfaction with the work environment and social interaction. This quantitative study tested hypotheses to determine the relationships between various variables. The data was collected through questionnaire survey and the partial least squares of structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze the data. The respondents were 238 programmers and designers in creative mobile industries that were supported by, or clustered in, the creative multimedia companies in the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) in Malaysia. The findings of the study showed that personal control over work environment in an open-plan workspace within creative mobile industries had a positive effect on individuals’ satisfaction with work environment and social interaction. The findings also indicated the positive and significant effect of personal control on individuals’ creative outcome. The results also indicated that environmental distraction had no significant effect on creative outcomes. The findings also highlighted the importance of employees’ perceptions on the ability to have personal control over the ambient conditions in open-plan workspaces to enhance their work-related behavior and creative outcomes. Managers, space designers and architects can use the knowledge gained from this study to give office users as much control as they need to have a positive effect on their work behavior and outcome. The knowledge obtained from this study can also help office designers and policy makers to provide and to set standards for open-plan workspaces to meet the employees’ needs and to enhance their creative outcome
